On the 23rd-24th October 2008 InterAfrica Group in partnership with the Office of the UN Special Representative for the Prevention of Genocide and Mass Atrocities headed by Dr. Francis Deng and the International Peace Institute headed by Dr Luck held a roundtable meeting on the Responsibility to Protect in Africa (RtoP).
The meeting was held in United Nation Economic Commission for Africa, Addis Ababa and attended by 30 highly regarded policymakers, academics, specialist in law, politics and peacekeeping on the Horn of Africa and beyond.
Discussions began with the R2P three pillars its challenges and opportunities. Sessions included deliberations on the following:-
- Prevention, capacity building and rebuilding: lessons learned from Kenya, Rwanda, Sierra Leone and Burundi
- The right to intervene under the AU Constitutive Act
- Emerging principles and practice in peace operations in Africa: global, regional and sub-regional perspectives
- Protection of women and children in RtoP situations
- RtoP in the Horn of Africa: actual and potential collaboration between the UN and regional and sub-regional partners.
